Mafi Natural Wood Floors

Mafi is an international natural wood flooring brand. Our portfolio includes a variety of natural wood floors, and also offers several additional solutions such as stairs, skirting, as well as care and installation materials. Here you will find a compact overview.

Our range runs from classic country house planks via creative designs to customer-specific special productions. Almost all planks are manufactured in a symmetrical 3-layer construction. Thus, the planks are very stable, allow distinct dimensions and are ideal for installation on underfloor heating. The dimensions are dependent on the product selected, but the maximum version is a plank five meters in length and 30cm in width. The surface is finished with natural oils, is thus totally ecological and provides direct contact with the wood. We offer different types of wood, in different collations and surface finishes.

Symmetrical 3-layer construction

The facts:

  • Top layer and back layer from the same wood in the same thermo treatment
  • Middle layer from Spruce cross-glued 90°
  • Bonding with formaldehyde-free white glue

The advantages:

  • very high stability greatly
  • reduced risk of gaps
  • ideal for installation on underfloor heating
  • wide range of applications
  • imposing dimensions of up to 5 metres in length and widths of 300mm possible
  • optimum resource usage

The construction of a plank is, aside from the surface finishing, the most important quality factor in the choice of the correct parquet.

The constuction in detail

The mafi typical 3-layer symmetrical construction consists of the top and back layers from the same wood in the same thermo treatment. The result is an equally strong counter-move, which greatly reduces the movement of the wood (swelling and shrinkage behaviour). The middle layer consists of an Austrian Pine cross-glued at 90°, which ensures extra stability. The softwood provides for a certain degree of flexibility, which reduces tension in the plank.

Symmetry guarantees stability

The sum of these characteristics allows even more intense use of the wooden floor, such as on underfloor heating with the associated risk of gaps or also the use in bathrooms. Even when installing, there are more possibilities starting with different installation methods up to the topic of reduction of expansion gaps. Please note the mafi installation instructions.

Other types of construction: Piccolino Collection

The planks of the Piccolino Collection are manufactured in a compact multi-layer structure with a Spruce middle layer and Spruce as a counter-move. The thickness of the plank thus reaches 10mm in total, different to the planks with symmetrical 3-layer construction which can be 16, 19 or 21mm, depending on the product. The low height makes the floors of the Piccolino Collection especially attractive in restorations and renovations. Special installation patterns such as herringbone are also possible on request. We recommend a full surface gluing of the planks on a standard-flat underfloor.

Other types of construction: Domino Collection

The floors of the Domino Collection consist of grain-block wood cubes in the size of 20x20mm. These are delivered bonded in turn on a parquet-net in a 400 x 200 format. This type of flooring has a long tradition as workshop floors in Austria and is characterised by its extremely high robustness. As these are solid wood floors, they must be full-surface glued on standard-flat underfloors. An expansion gap should be included every 25m². Please note the mafi installation instructions.

Futher information:

What types of parquet construction are there?

The construction is a decisive factor in the longevity and stability of the planks. Generally, we distinguish between solid parquet and multi-layer parquet. Solid wood parquet uses the same piece of wood across the entire thickness. The swelling and shrinkage behaviour or the warping of the floor represents the largest problem with this type of construction. Underfloor heating increases this problem. Multi-layer parquet consists of different layers starting from the top layer. After that, mostly softer, less expensive woods are used as carriers. High-quality parquet floors have a counter-move and thus consist of three layers.

How does the mafi constuction differ from other products?

You can see a high-quality parquet floor construction with a symmetrical 3-layer construction. The symmetry is that both the visible top layer, and the back layer, also called the counter-move, must consist of the same wood and same treatment. This greatly reduces the natural movement of the wood across the width. The middle layer, in corresponding thickness’ and large softwood boards, should be glued at a 90° angle to the slats. Symmetrical 3-layer planks have far fewer gaps and are ideal for rooms with underfloor heating.

Expert Tip:
"You should always check the construction of of the planks, because only a symmetrical design guarantees optimum stability - especially on underfloor heating."

Tailor-Made in Austria

mafi planks are created to a simple but clear philosophy. Working with wood means reducing the “bad”, while preserving the good. When applied to wooden floors, it's about keeping the regenerative abilities and health promoting aspects of the wood, whilst curbing wear & tear as well as the swelling and shrinkage behaviour of the wood. For this mafi chooses a combination of air-dried, oiled surfaces and a symmetrical three layer plank structure. In this way, the wooden planks remain natural and breathable, whilst still stable and robust. The awkward gap formation on underfloor heating is also greatly reduced by this symmetrical structure.

Real natural wood floors create something that is now lacking in many rooms but is barely palpable. The natural, warm underfoot material wood gives a room a soul and generates a feeling of contentment that reminds many people of childhood. However, wood doesn’t have to be old-fashioned. As a floor, wood fits pleasantly into a room and gives it a real base.

The mafi brand is a family business from Schneegattern, Upper Austria, which has processed wood as a material for over 100 years in Austria, and only in Austria. mafi began originally as a sawmill and developed from producing ornate ceilings to the innovative and sustainable parquet production seen today. Worldwide, the reference portfolio now ranges from Mexico, Qatar, Moscow via Monte Carlo, South Africa to New York and London. In total, people live on mafi natural wood floors in over 50 countries and in all climatic zones.

Solutions for all application areas

Stability, naturalness and ease of use in practice are the core values of our products. Thanks to the symmetrical 3-layer construction and natural oiled surface, mafi wood floors can be used in almost all areas.

mafi floors are even pre-destined for installation on underfloor heating. The symmetry in the construction reduces the natural movement of the wood and thus the risk of gaps.

In a private house, a mafi floor can be easily installed in all areas. The oiled surface in combination with regular soap care makes it extremely robust and insensitive. Thus, open living areas including kitchens can be installed throughout. Due to the porous surface and the associated exchange of humidity, mafi natural wood floors have also been installed in bathrooms. The direct contact with the wood ensures an always body warm feel.

mafi floors are used also in commercial projects, such as hotels, restaurants and shops. The possibility for local repairs, so purely on the problem area and not the whole floor surface, is particularly appreciated in this context.
